409&409L SS Crystalline characteristics
Solid-Liquid Phase of 409L Steel:
- The solid and liquid two-phase region in 409L steel is very narrow, less than 30°C.
- At elevated temperatures, there’s minimal γ phase present, resulting in significant supercooling during crystallization.
- Rapid nucleation occurs due to direct contact, leading to the formation of fine equiaxed crystals instead of columnar crystals.
Crystal Formation Process:
- Upon crystallization, fine grains rapidly form on the surface of 409L steel.
- The narrow temperature range in the liquid-solid two-phase zone prevents significant component overcooling and the growth of columnar crystals.
- Carbon and titanium diffuse to form titanium carbide particles, inhibiting the growth of columnar crystals.
Structural Characteristics of 409L Steel:
- The absence of columnar crystals results in a structure dominated by equiaxed crystals of varying sizes.
- At temperatures around 1100°C with higher carbon content, some carbides and chromium-depleted areas may appear, and a small amount of δ phase may form.
